TITLE: “Gardens Near the Sea”

By Alice Lounsberry.
Published in New York by Frederick A. Stokes Company in 1910.

DISCUSSION: “The making and care of gardens on or near the coast with
reference also to lawns and grounds and to trees and shrubbery”. Alice
Lounsberry [1873-1949] was an American botanist and author who worked
closely with the Australian botanical artist Ellis Rowan, who published
three books with her as illustrator. Lounsberry herself authored six books
on gardens and botany. Hedrick and Woodburn note that this title "has
occupied an almost unique niche for years. It gives practical advice on
how to establish barriers to enable gardens to survive and gives lists of
plants suitable for planting near the sea". The 8 color plates are
reproductions of paintings by Herbert W. Faulkner.

white plates. Pictorial covers.

foxing throughout, but otherwise clean and nice, with a tight, publisher's
reinforced binding.
