Paternoster Row. 1869.

First edition. Octavo, rebound in contemporary half calf over marbled 
paper boards, spine with raised bands and decorated gilt in 
compartmens, contrasting leather title labels, top edges gilt, 
marbled endpapers. 320 + 328 pp, frontispiece to each volume plus 18 
additional full-page plates by Millais, all with the original tissue 
guards except the two plates located at p. 157 and 250 of Vol One, 
which lack these tissue guards but likely the volume was issued as 
such. The plate listed as being at p. 328 in Vol Two is in fact the 
frontispiece plate.

Small bookplate removed from front paste-down of Volume One, free 
endpapers starting to crack along the inner hinge (but holding 
still); top fore-edge corners of the boards of volume 2 bumped and a 
bit frayed, small splits to the leather at the top eges of both 
spines, although again holding with no loss; a good / very good set.
