BAL 10766: Binding A. 1st edition E&L B6a. Blue cloth stamped in gold and silver. The earliest frontis with subject turned left. Illustrated. A nice copy.  ($40)  $20

PIRON, [Alexis].  OEUVRES CHOISIES DE PIRON. 2 Volumes.  Geneva (or Paris?), 1777.Approx 4-1/2 x 2-1/2 inches, in full mottled calf. Gilt rule frames on covers and ornate gilt decoration and lettering on spines. All edges gilt. Marbled endpapers. Spine joints rubbed and chipped, (a bit more severely on Volume 2) with bottom 1/4 inch of spines lacking or damaged. A bit rubbed along edges. Portrait frontis. "A light, witty, poet, author of many keen epigrams, besides verse tales, satires, &c, not free from course buffoonery;  Piron's election to the Academie... was vetoed by Louis XV on account of a licentious "Ode a Priope," (Oxford Companion to French Literature). Approximately 7-3/4 x 5 inches. In ribbed brown cloth, decoratively stamped in blind with gilt lettering on spines. A little rubbed at head and heel of spines. A very good set of the first edition of this translation.  ($150)  $60

N Y., 1970.  Three volumes from the series, Vol. I: Pierre Abailard - L. S. Berg, Vol. II: Hans Berger - Christoph Buys Ballot, and Vol. IV: Richard Dedekin - Firmicus Maternus.  Each volume a thick 4to, 11 x 9 inches in black and gold stamped green cloth.  The second volume has the original dust wrapper, but is an exlibrary copy with the expected markings and marks to the edges as well.  Overall a  good  group of 3 volumes from this useful and authoritative reference source.  ($50)  $25
