ANDERSON, Sherwood. MARCHING MEN. New York: John Lane Company, 1917.
First Edition. A fine association copy of Sherwood Anderson's second
book INSCRIBED and SIGNED by the author on the front endpaper: "Marietta
Finley/With Regards and Good/Wishes/Sherwood Anderson." Marietta "Babs"
Finley was a close friend of Anderson's who kept up a correspondence
with him that was published in 1985 as LETTERS TO BAB: SHERWOOD ANDERSON
TO MARIETTA D. FINLEY, 1916-33. In a letter to William Sutton in 1962,
Finley commented that Anderson habitually left carbon copies of
WINESBURG stories with her when he visited her in Indianapolis: "These I
kept and once, I recall, he was camping out in the Adirondacks at
Chateaugay and there was a fire in his tent. He lost some of the
WINESBURG stories and asked me to send the copies I had." A silver print
photograph of a fairly young Anderson is partly taped at the corners to
the front pastedown. Some tape on the front pastedown and skimming to
the rear endpaper from the removal of a clipping; the front hinge is
cracked with the cover a little loose. The spine is dull but readable.
