(Civil War) GENERAL ORDERS, WAR DEPARTMENT, ADJUTANT GENERAL'S OFFICE, 1865. Washington: Government Printing Office, 1865. First edition. Octavo, three quarter calf and marbled boards and edges. The Orders are preceded by the INDEX OF GENERAL ORDERS, ADJUTANT GENERAL'S OFFICE, 1865. Washington: Government Printing Office, 1866. 94pp. This volume of the General Orders is complete. All 175 of the separately issued orders are present including those pertaining to the Lincoln Assassination. The pagination varies. This volume belonged to T. (Theodore) Kalisch, who served with the 2nd Regiment U. S. Artillery, (Regular Army). This copy is ex-library and bears stamps. It was recently discarded. Internally it is very good and as previously stated complete. There is even a errata slip. The binding is worn. Boards and spine are all detached but present. Leather spine remains attached to front board. The book block is tight and intact. The orders that pertain to the assassination of the President include no. 66, Sunday, April 16, in which "the Secretary of War announces to the Armies of the United States the untimely and lamentable death of the illustrious Abraham Lincoln"; no. 67 (same day), in which "it is hereby announced to the armies of the United States, that on Saturday, the 15th of April, 1865, by reason of the death of Abraham Lincoln, the office of the President of the United States devolved upon ANDREW JOHNSON…". The Supplemental Orders describing the Transfer of the President's body are impressive. $650.00
