Francis Home: Principia Medicinae. Edinburgi [Edinburgh]: Impensis Andreae Millar… et Alex. Kincaid & Jo. Bell, 1762. Second edition. Text in Latin. Recently rebound in quarter gilt-tooled morocco over marbled boards, new endpapers; 8vo (20.5 cm); xii + 316 pp. ESTC T55407.

Francis Home (1719-1813) was an eminent Edinburgh physician and a leading medical figure of the Scottish Enlightenment. A founding member of the Royal Medical Society, he was also president of the Physical section of the Royal Society of Edinburgh and succeeded William Cullen as president of the Royal College of Physicians of Edinburgh. In 1758 he was the first physician to attempt to vaccinate against measles. The Principia was his magnum opus.

Institutional gilt stamp at the foot of the spine and very faint ink stamp to the title-page; no other library markings. A couple of small chips to the edges of the title-page, light damp-stain to the upper gutter of the first 35 leaves, mild even toning to the text; otherwise clean and sound and firmly bound in a fresh, handsome modern binding. Front paste-down with the clipped period signature of R. [or A.?] Rudwood and a signed presentation bookplate from a Dr. Blackall. A nice copy of a rather uncommon work: ESTC locates only 6 copies of this edition in U.S. institutions, 8 in the UK.
