Large & small woodcut initials. 17th century calf, covers with gilt tooled borders. Spine chipped at head & foot (1-1/2" at bottom section). Hinges with old repairs. The first edition of this study of allegory in the Old & New Testaments by the medieval philosopher and theologian Hugh of Saint Victor (1096-1141), edited and with a preface by J. Clichton. This early Estienne imprint is rare in today's trade, with no copy appearing in the ABPC database. Adams H 1144. Renouard ESTIENNE p. 19 (1517 #1). Not in the Schreiber catalog. Not in the BL French STC.
