Kings and Queens of Ancient Egypt.   Portraits by Winifred Brunton.   History by Eminent Egyptologists.   Foreword by Professor J. H. Breasted.   London: Hodder and Stoughton, [1924].   First edition.   Illustrated with 18 tipped-in portraits, fifteen of which are color plates and three of which are photographs of mummies.   Small 4to, original brown cloth with gilt lettering and decoration, in the original illustrated dustjacket.   [v], 163 pp.   The book has some minor foxing to the prelims and terminal leaves and some foxing on the page edges (but generally not on the pages themselves), but otherwise is tight, bright, and clean; the dustjacket has some minor edgewear and some closed tears but overall is in unusually nice condition.   A near-fine copy.

An interesting attempt to reconstruct the physical appearance of the Egyptian monarchs based on historical information and—using mummies as the model—physical evidence, much like a forensic anthropologist might reconstruct the earliest humans or modern murder victim based on a few fossil bones or decomposed remains.

Winifred Brunton (1880-1959) was the wife of British Egyptologist Guy Brunton, who excavated with Sir Flinders Petrie at Lahun (among other sites), and Winifred illustrated many of his excavation reports.   This book was produced to capitalize on the lucrative pre-Depression gift book market and the popularity of Egyptian subjects and is surprisingly handsome for a historical work.
