[Albrecht von Haller (ed.):] Disputationes Chirurgicae Selectae, Collegit, Editit, Praefatus Est Albertus Hallerus. Tomus Quartus. Lausannae [Lausanne]: Sumptibus Marci-Michael, Bousquest, & Socior., MDCCLV [1755]. First edition thus. Text in Latin. Volume IV only (of V); 4to (25 x 20 cm) in nineteenth-century burgundy cloth; [2] + 594 pp.; engraved title-page vignette and 13 engraved leaves of plates, 6 of which are folding (complete, with one plate bound out of sequence).

The fourth volume only, but complete in itself, with all thirteen handsomely printed plate leaves called for. A collection of medical treatises and dissertations selected and edited by Albrecht von Haller (1708-1777), Swiss anatomist and physiologist, a student of Boerhaave and Albinus. Deaccessioned from a research institution, with its gilt stamp to the spine and light, fairly unobtrusive ink stamps to the title-page and most plates; wear to the binding extremities, front inner hinge cracked but secure; age-toning to the text leaves, occasional light spotting to the text and plates; otherwise quite clean and sound.

Includes illustrated treatises on LITHOTOMY or "CUTTING FOR THE STONE" (in fact, numerous works on gall and kidney stones and the surgical procedures to remove them); OSTEOLOGY & BONE DISEASE (femur, knee, hand, tumores ossium [bony tumors]); and a wicked array of SURGICAL INSTRUMENTS & DEVICES.
