*Offered*: *The Happy Lad* by Bjornstjerne Bjornson (later printing but a
very difficult signature)* Signed. *

*Bjornson, Bjornstjerne Martinius*. *The Happy Lad* [*Signed*]. London:
Blackie & Son, 1884. Later printing. A Near Fine copy (light wear, very
mildly askew, spine a touch darkened - but leaving the gilt lettering quite
bright, lower corner of front board rubbed through, front free endpaper
excised) of this work by Nobel Prize-Winning Swedish Author Bjornstjerne
Bjornson. First published in Norway titled "En glad Gut" (A Happy Boy)
[1860], the first English translation was published in 1869 by Simpkin,
Marshall, and Co. under the title "Ovind: A Story of Norwegian Country
Life". The book offered here constitutes a separate translation for
publication by Blackie & Son, which itself was first published in 1882.
Copies of "Ovind" are quite scarce, and copies of any early printing of
"The Happy Lad" are difficult to find, especially ones as early as is this
copy. Of course, signed copies of any edition of any Bjornson book are
hen's teeth. Considered to be one of the 4 greatest of all Norwegian
writers (along with Henrik Ibsen, Jonas Lie, and Alexander Kielland),
Bjornson won the 1903 Nobel Prize in Literature. Signed copies of this
works are extraordinarily scarce and our search of the auction records
shows no signed copies of his works having been brought to auction in the
past 60+ years (with the only items signed by him coming to auction in that
period being a few signed letters). An excellent copy of an extremely hard
to find book SIGNED BY BJORNSTJERNE BJORNSON. RARE. Near Fine.
(#00002900) $1,850.00
