CLAY, Henry. AUTOGRAPH DOCUMENT SIGNED. Washington, 21 May 1832.
Document (13-1/2" x 9-1/2") from the American Colonization Society
conferring lifetime membership upon G. W. Burnet and SIGNED by the
society's president Henry Clay who at the time was also a United States
Senator and candidate for President of the United States on the Whig
ticket. Just a few years after this document was signed Clay, who looked
with dread on the spread of abolitionism, would make his famous
statement connected with this issue: "I had rather be right than be
President." The document has a neat vertical split right down the middle
fold separating it into two pieces and a long tear on one horizontal
fold not affecting Clay's signature. Tears and chips along outer edges.
(#007678) $500.00
