[MELVILLE]. FRANKLIN [H.] BRUCE. THE WAKE OF THE GODS. Stanford, 1963. First edition. Original blue cloth stamped in gold, very good. Author's 2-page autograph letter inserted signed "Fondly, Bruce" to Joe Winston "I am really delighted to hear ... that you are interested in my opus." Family news, &c. ALSO: Signed inscription by Franklin to Winston "with warm regards" on end paper. (Franklin is well-known as a Melville scholar and has served as the President of the Melville Society.) $65.00

[BUONARROTI, MICHELANGELO, the younger]. LA TANCIA COMMEDIA RUSTICALE. Firenze: Appresso Cosimo Giunti, 1612. The rare first edition of what is considered the finest Italian play of the 17th Century, .(Buonarroti's other play is unproduceable due to its length.) Modern half calf with patterned boards, slightly rubbed, old ink notes on one margin, faint soiling on several leaves, otherwise a very clean, attractive copy. There are 2 large printer's marks, one on the title page and the other on the last page, and they exhibit two quite different designs. 62 leaves, 182 mm. In his plays Buonarroti was noted for his use of the local dialects. He was the namesake and great nephew of the artist, whom he memorialized with the improvements and additions he made to the building and the collections at the famous Casa Buonarroti at 70 Via Ghibillins in Florence. OCLC locates only 3 or 4 copies in Europe and 5 in the U.S. A rare addition to any library of 17th Century literature.
