*Offered*: *: Rare copy of Zorba the Greek signed by Nikos Kazantzakis,
Anthony Quinn, and George Seferis**

Kazantzakis, Nikos*; [Seferis, George; Quinn, Anthony]. *Zorba the
Greek* [*Signed
3x*: by Nikos Kazantzakis, Anthony Quinn, and George Seferis]G. London:
John Lehmann Ltd., 1952. First edition. A Very Good copy of the first UK
edition, first printing -- also being the first edition in English
translation -- with Kazantzakis' name misspelled "Kazantzaki" both on the
dust jacket and on the title page (spine ends mildly pushed, spine lightly
sunned, minor curving to the boards, expected age toning and mild foxing to
the bulked page edges), in a Very Good + lightly toned pictorial dust
jacket (minor edge wear, tiny chipping to panel edges, quite small
sympathetic repair to a chip where the front panel meets the spine panel
bottom), SIGNED BY NIKOS KAZANTZAKIS on the title page, INSCRIBED, PLACED,
AND SIGNED BY GEORGE SEFERIS to REX WARNER on the half-title, and SIGNED BY
ANTHONY QUINN on the front free endpaper as follows: "Best to you / Anthony
Quinn". [Seferis' inscription appears to us to be the opening lines of his
famed poem "Letter to Rex Warner", written by Seferis as a tribute to
Warner and to their friendship.] A fabulous Association copy of
Kazantzakis' magnum opus and the basis for the 1964 film of the same name
starring Anthony Quinn, Alan Bates, Lila Kedrova, Irene Papas, and Sotiris
Moustakas, which brought Kazantzakis to worldwide fame. (Kazantzakis' fame
was later renewed by the 1988 Martin Scorsese film adaptation of
Kazantzakis' novel "The Last Temptation of Christ", a book which the Roman
Catholic Church added to its list of Prohibited Books and which caused the
Greek Orthodox Church to anathematize him in 1955.) Born in Crete while the
island remained a part of the Ottoman Empire, Kazantzakis, after spending
much of his life abroad, became active in Greek politics, entering the
government as a Minister without Portfolio, but soon resigning. Nominated
for the 1957 Nobel Prize in Literature, Kazantzakis fell one vote short of
Albert Camus who was awarded that year's Prize. This remarkable copy of
Nikos Kazantzakis' best-known work has been INSCRIBED AND SIGNED BY GEORGE
SEFERIS, one of Greece's most important 20th Century Poets and the first
Greek winner of the Nobel Prize in Literature (1963), to his good friend,
frequent translator, and fellow author Rex Warner, with Seferis writing out
a portion of his own poetry in Greek, and also is INSCRIBED AND SIGNED BY
ANTHONY QUINN, who starred in the movie which brought Kazantzakis to
worldwide fame and which also was the high water mark of Quinn's career,
and furthermore has been SIGNED BY NIKOS KAZANTZAKIS himself. This first
edition in English translation is itself a very scarce book. Furthermore,
Signed copies of any of Kazantzakis' books are extraordinary scarcities and
signed copies of his works in English Translation are rarer still. A RARE
copy of a book which itself is extraordinarily scarce. In this seller's
opinion, quite simply the best copy of the famed author's most famous work
to have. RARE. Very Good in very good + dust-jacket. Hardcover.
