This set with the very useful double column index of 144 pages which was separately published in 1608, by J. Winter at Lauingen and is bound at the end of Volume 2. The first edition of this universal history, heavily illustrated. The text is from various historical sources, put into a chronicle arrangement, and inclusive of all cultural histories covering various areas of knowledge. Along with church histories are included numerous scandalous anecdotes often illustrated with satirical woodcuts. Volume 1 covers world history to the year 1500, and Volume 2 from 1500 to 1600. The fine woodcuts (with many repeats) include the sets from Jost Ammans costume book, TRACHTENBUCH DER KATHOL GEISTLICHKEIT. The elaborate title borders and numerous satirical woodcuts are by J. Lederlein (Nagler III, 2270), with other woodcuts coming from various sources including a fine set of biblical illustrations.
