H. Sumner Mitchell was a Unitarian minister in Keene, NH. His diary begins
on the S.S. Statendam, sailing from NYC. A week later, he arrives at
Plymouth Harbor and trains up to London's Grand Hotel, detailing what he
sees enroute. He interprets sights in the UK through the lens of
Liberalism, commenting on poverty, wages, racism, etc. He attends church
services on his journey as well as an international conference of Liberal
Christians at Oxford University. ~ Mitchell is a careful observer with a
love of history, botany, and odd facts. He provides detailed descriptions
of the places he visits. His journey takes him via steamer, train, coach,
and carriage through Great Britain, visiting London, Oxford,
Stratford-on-Avon, Liverpool, Dublin, Killarney, Belfast, Portrush,
Glasgow, Loch Lomond, Edinburgh and York, stopping at villages and churches
along the way. Mitchell's daily entries are full of local color and detail.
~ After a 14-page description of scenes viewed on the coach ride from
Edinburgh to York, HSM is off to London and the return trip to America on
the S.S. Volendam. $100.00
