(JESUITS) Maffei, Giovanni Pietro. DE VITA ET MORIBUS IGNATII LOIOLAE, Qui Societatem Jesu Fundauit, Libri III. Venice: Apud Iolitos. 1585. Sm. 8vo. (24),286,(2)pp. Index. Title printed within a woodcut historiated and architectural border that incorporates the publisher's device at bottom. A larger woodcut device is on the colophon. Numerous historiated woodcut capitals. Cont. limp vellum, a bit soiled, hand lettered spine. Middle portion of the outer front hinge is split but cover is holding soundly. Very light old water stain at bottom blank margin of first 19 leaves. Title lettered in ink on bottom edge of text block.	$1,000.00 (trade discount allowed)
The second edition (the first appeared in Rome in the same year). An earlier life of Loyola by Ribadeneyra had appeared in 1572, but it is considered more rhetorical than historical. Pope Gregory XIII was so impressed by Maffei's version that he asked him to write a history of his own pontificate. Bongi II, pp. 397-98; Palau 146955. BL Italian STC p. 402.
