Description Exacte de tout ce qui s'est passe dans les Guerres entre le Roy d'Angleterre, le Roy de France, les Estats des Provinces Unies du Pays-Bas, & l'Evesque de Munster. Commençant de l'An 1664. First edition in French. Small 4to (18.5 x 15 cm) in period mottled calf, recently rebacked with raised bands and gilt-lettered spine labels; 241 + [3] pp.; engraved vignettes. Howes K253; European Americana 668/43.

First French-language edition, thus the first widely-read edition, of this work first published in Dutch the year before. A detailed account of the second Anglo-Dutch War of 1664-1667, it is of particular American interest for containing the first published account (pp. 22-25) of the capture of New Amsterdam/Manhattan and the surrender of the colony of New Netherland ("…les Anglais avec quelques vaisseaux de Guerre estants arrivees aux Manathans devant le Citadelle le Nouveau Amsterdam…"), including the terms of the capitulation. The work also contains (p. 36) one of the very earliest references to the colony as "New York" ("nouveau Jorck"). "This work may be considered as the most complete and authentic contemporary account of the war between Holland and England, the consequence of which was the final loss of New-Netherland, by the peace of Breda, 1667" (Sabin). Also included are lists of the English and Dutch fleets and the vessels captured by the British in America, accounts of De Ruyter's expedition to the West Indies, affairs in Barbados and the East Indies, the war in Europe, the capture of Surinam by the Dutch, etc.

With nine copper engravings (complete) depicting naval engagements, battles, the Great Fire of London, etc. Binding with wear and bumping to the corners, inner hinges professionally repaired; generally mild toning to the leaves with occasional browning due to inferior paper quality, some scattered spots and stains, a few leaves with faint damp-stain to the fore-edges; otherwise the contents are quite clean and crisp, firmly bound. Front endpaper with an early owner's elegant signature ("Méebin"); front paste-down with the engraved armorial bookplate of W. Combes.
