One of many interesting 19th Century American and British Literary items
on our website: http://www.charlesagvent.com including signed pieces by
Ralph Waldo Emerson, William Wordsworth, Mark Twain, Henry Longfellow,
and many others with some superb pieces to be cataloged in the coming
months.
SHELLEY, Percy Bysshe. QUEEN MAB. London: W. Clark, 1821. First Edition.
First Published Edition, a piracy after the scarce 1813 edition which
Shelley had privately printed. Octavo (5-3/8" x 8-3/4"), somewhat larger
than the Tinker (1888) copy. Lacking the dedication leaf to Harriet, as
usual, but with the final ad leaf, often found lacking. This copy also
has unmutilated text whereas many copies had words omitted on certain
pages. Beautifully bound in full burgundy morocco leather by Tout & Sons
with elaborate gilt designs in the corners of both covers, heavily
gilt-decorated spine, full morocco doublures with even more elaborate
gilt decoration, and watered silk linings. Recently and virtually
imperceptively rebacked with the original spine laid down. Near Fine in
a sumptuous binding. (#010200) $1,500.00
