TITLE: “Theodore Wores’ Collection of Paintings of Japanese Subjects.
Exhibition at Reichard & Co.’s, 226 fifth Ave.”

Published in New York in April, 1888.

DISCUSSION: Theodore Wores [1859-1939] was an American painter born in San
Francisco, known for his paintings of the California landscape, as well as
his travel-inspired paintings of Hawaii and Japan, which he visited twice.
Wores began his artistic training age 12, and when he was 15 he was one of
the first students to enroll in the new San Francisco School of Design. He
later spent six years at the Royal Academy in Munich, where he fell in
with the "Duveneck Boys" a group of young artists who followed American
expatriate painter Frank Duveneck on trips to France and Italy. He
returned to San Francisco in 1882, but the travel bug had bitten him, and
he lived in Meiji, Japan from 1885 to 1887, and again between 1892 and
1894. He followed up these trips with exhibitions of his Japanese-themed
paintings in New York and London, and through them became a friend of
James Abbott McNeill Whistler and Oscar Wilde.

This is the handlist of the 39 paintings of Japanese subjects, and 6 of
Chinese subjects, he exhibited in New York in April, 1888. Some of the
paintings are described, others simply have the title listed.

A rare small catalog, and a very intriguing documentation of an early trip
to Japan by an American artist.
