Brome, Alexander. SONGS AND OTHER POEMS. London: Printed for Henry Brome. 1661. First edition. Sm. 8vo. Irregular pagination but compete (approx. 300pp.). Copper engraved frontispiece portrait. Woodcut crown on title page. 18th c. green calf, gilt, worn. Rebacked in 20th c. gilt tooled green morocco, orig. red calf spine label laid back down. Engraved bookplate on front pastedown and on front free endpaper. Some light browning and a few small burn marks (2 on final two leaves with minor text loss). $1,500.00 (trade discount allowed)
The very scarce first edition of this collection of Cavalier Poems. Included in it are numerous amorous and drinking songs, poems to mistresses, political satires in favor of Royalists, and a poem entitled, "Ben. Johnsons Sociable Rules for the Apollo." An eclogue in praise of Brome, written by Izaak Walton, is dated 29 May 1660. Wing B4852.
