Vanderbilt University. HANDWRITTEN ESSAY, "A WEEK AT VANDERBILT," BY A
GRADUATE STUDENT AT THE TURN OF THE 20TH CENTURY. Nashville, Tennessee,
Circa 1900. Original manuscript. 7pp in pencil, written in a very neat
hand. 10.25" x 7.75" Very Good.
Written by a male grad student and member of the Park Street League, whose
studies tend to focus on the classics. He mentions Nashville, the
Cumberland River, and a student body of 700. (The Vanderbilt U website
states that 754 students were registered by 1900.) The writer states that
this article is for the "No Name Paper," perhaps a real publication,
perhaps a generic phrase. His intended audience are Park St. Leaguers, and
he tells them in detail of his daily schedule for a week, including course
work, recreation, basketball, meals, etc., and mentions "the preachers who
are studying theology over at Wesley Hall." He also comments on "the
`Co-Eds' as the 50 young ladies in Vanderbilt are called, noting that they
are quite a distraction in the classroom," known to some as "chattering
magpies." He describes faculty members with whom he studies, &c., &c. Quite
a nice look at Vanderbilt some 110 years ago. $75.00
