Francis Grose: The Antiquarian Repertory: A Miscellaneous Assemblage of Topography, History, Biography, Customs, and Manners. Intended to Illustrate and Preserve several Valuable Remains of Old Times… Adorned with Numerous Views, Portraits, and Monuments. A New Edition, with a Great Many Valuable Additions. London: Printed and Published for Edward Jeffery, 1807-09. First edition thus. Four volumes bound in nineteenth-century half calf and marbled boards; large 4tos (30 x 25 cm; 11 3/4 x 10 in); subscribers lists, publishers adverts, tables, engraved plates.

With 234 engraved plate leaves (counted but not collated: appears to be complete), several folding or double-page, one hand-colored. Bindings with modest shelf-wear and bumping to the corners, light rubbing/sunning to the spines, several joints/hinges cracked but holding; contents with occasional scattered spotting and offsetting, occasional light damp-stains to the margins, but generally very good or better.

A profusely illustrated and much expanded edition of Francis Grose's monumental compendium of British relics, remains, history and lore from Roman, Anglo-Saxon and medieval times, the Renaissance, the English Civil War (Cromwell, etc.), the Restoration (Great Fire of London), etc. The plates include portraits, facsimiles, inscriptions and maps, views of ruins, castles, tombs, artifacts, etc., etc. This edition includes Grose's Rules for Drawing Caricaturas, with an Essay on Comic Painting with 30 of his own caricatures.
