JOHNSON, James Weldon (editor). THE BOOK OF AMERICAN NEGRO POETRY. New 
York: Harcourt, Brace and Company, (1922). First Edition. "Chosen and 
edited with an essay on the Negro's Creative Genius" by Johnson who has 
INSCRIBED and SIGNED the book on the front endpaper: "To Senator Samuel 
M. Shortridge,/With the sincere admiration of/James Weldon 
Johnson/November 28,1922." Slight foxing to preliminaries, slight wear 
to covers with rubbed spot at the heel of the spine and a smaller spot 
on the front spine edge. Lacking the rare dustwrapper. Very Good or 
better and scarce when signed.
Samuel M. Shortridge was a Republican Senator from California and a 
descendant of Daniel Boone. He was elected to the U.S. Senate in 1920, 
riding Warren G. Harding's post World War I "Return to Normalcy" 
campaign, and reelected in 1926. (#016959) $1,500.00
