Robert Cruikshank, illus.: Pierce Egan's Finish to the Adventures of Tom, Jerry, and Logic, in their Pursuits through Life In and Out of London. London: John Camden Hotten, [1870]. Tall 8vo (23 cm) bound in full calf by Morrell of London with gilt-tooled borders and dentelles, spine decorated in gilt with red and green morocco spine labels; top page edges giit, other edges untrimmed; 368 pp.; 36 hand-colored plates.

A relatively early reissue of this rollicking sequel to Egan and Cruikshank's enormously popular Life in London, and a very handsome example indeed. Of the several editions of the work published in the 1870s and 80s, most by Reeves & Turner, this one has by far the finest examples of the plates that we've come across: the colors rich and vivid and heightened with gum arabic. The attractive calf binding by Morrell features an appropriately "sporting" motif of a prize-fighter repeated in the spine compartments. The original publisher's cloth covers (front and rear covers and spine) are bound in at the rear. Binding with a few very minor scuffs, a hint of sunning to the spine and the top of the front board; contents lightly toned with some modest bumping to the untrimmed corners; otherwise clean and sound and firmly bound. Professional repairs to the front hinge and the gutter between the frontispiece and title-page. Front paste-down with the handsome armorial bookplate of Geoffrey Ecroyd. An appealing copy, inside and out.
