TITLE: “Japanese Cloisonne Enamels. The Stephen W. Fisher Collection”

By Robert Mintz.
Published in Baltimore by The Walters Art Gallery in 2009.

DISCUSSION: "The final decades of the 19th century and the first decades
of the 20th saw the production of Japan's most exquisite cloisonné
enamels. Their manufacture was stimulated by international demand kindled
at expositions in Europe and America and driven by artists' interest in
creating works that would simultaneously embody Japanese character and
demonstrate extraordinary technical sophistication. This publication,
accompanying an exhibition at the Walters Art Museum, documents over one
hundred masterpieces of the art from the Stephen W. Fisher Collection -one
of the world's finest collections of Japanese cloisonné enamel." In
additional to the catalog of the pieces, the text provides an account of
their collection, an overview of the cloisonné process in Japan in the
19th century, and brief accounts of the major workshops represented in the
collection.
