Brathwayte's Odes; or Philomel's Tears. Edited by Sir Egerton Brydges, Bart. Kent: Printed at the private Press of Lee Priory; by Johnson and Warwick, 1815. First edition thus. Small 8vo (20 cm) in modern card binding with marbled French wraps; [4],3,[5],2,36 p.; engraved vignettes, woodcut initials.

A handsome "revival" of the 1621 edition of Richard Brathwaite's poems by this esteemed early nineteenth-century fine press. A typically attractive piece, the text is printed within a triple-rule border and is ornamented with two engraved vignettes and a number of four-line woodcut initials. All the works printed at the Priory Press were limited to less than 100 copies; for that reason, and because they are avidly collected, examples are rather hard to come by.

A penciled note on the front free-endpaper indicates that this copy was purchased at the Penzance Library Sale of May 1964. With the library's unobtrusive perforated stamps on the title-page and the last text leaf; a hint of toning and faint spotting to the edges and the first and last leaf; otherwise the contents are very clean and crisp, recently bound in striking marbled-paper French wraps.
