George Borrow: The Bible in Spain; or, The Journeys, Adventures, and Imprisonments of an Englishman, in an Attempt to Circulate the Scriptures in the Peninsula. London: John Murray, 1843. FIRST EDITION. Three volumes, 8vo, in original publisher's cloth and printed spine labels; with the half-titles and publisher's adverts.

Spines cocked and bindings a bit shaken; text block of vol. I cracked at the gutter between pp. 192-193; several page-gatherings coming loose. Despite these (reparable) flaws, an unusually attractive copy in original condition. Some modest rubbing and wear to the boards, fairly modest chipping to the labels and spine ends; one volume with previous owner's signature to the front free-endpaper. Now protected in clear mylar dustjackets. Loosely laid in is a typed letter, dated 1975, from the rare booksellers Bernard Quaritch describing the books.

Far from being a religious tract, Borrow's Bible in Spain, his only unqualified literary success, is an eccentric and highly readable travelogue, regarded even by the Spanish themselves as one of the classic accounts of travel in Spain. It is also one of the earliest popular works to present an accurate and sympathetic view of gypsies, a people dear to Borrow's heart throughout his life.
