We are pleased to offer:

Bunnell, Lafayette Houghton. DISCOVERY OF THE YOSEMITE, AND THE INDIAN WAR OF 1851, WHICH LED TO THAT EVENT. Chicago: Fleming H. Revell, (1880). 331 pp. Illus. with a portrait of the author, 19 wood engraved views, and a map of Yosemite. Sm. 8vo. Blue cloth stamped in black and gilt. First edition. Bunnell's narrative is the principle source of information about the discovery of the Yosemite Valley by the Mariposa Battalion who were led there by fleeing Indians in March, 1851. While Farquhar acknowledges that Walker's 1833 expedition and occasional gold rush miners had probably glimpsed the valley, its "discovery" is credited to the Mariposa Battalion whose activities Bunnell documents for the first time. Bunnell's work is the cornerstone treatise on the discovery of the Yosemite Valley. Provenance: From the library of Kenneth E. Hill, with his bookplate. A very good+ copy, spine mildly sunned, minor rubbing to rear board, owner's name and bookplate on front pastedown. Farquhar 15a. Howes B954. Rocq 5160. Currey & Kruska 27. [40235] $500.00
