[Elwyn, Lizzy May]. TO-NIGHT! TUESDAY, FEB. 21st. AT OPERA HOUSE, BETHEL,
WILL BE PRESENTED THE POPULAR DRAMA IN FIVE ACTS "MILLIE THE QUADROON OR,
OUT OF BONDAGE"... [broadside]. [Bryant Pond, Maine] : Chase & Co.,
Printers, 1893. Original edition. Theatre broadside, 14" x 5.25", printed
on recto only. Lists the 13-member cast, gives a 52-line synopsis of the
play, the price of admission, &c. Shallow chip at lower edge, leaving a
partial imprint of Bry___. Still, a very good example of this fragile,
ephemeral item. [WorldCat records no holdings of this broadside.]
"Millie, the Quadroon," first published in 1888, is a five-act drama about
slavery, miscegenation and race relations, set in the Antebellum South.
Among the characters in the play are a Southern planter, two slaves, "a
mulatto," a Northern doctor, a Sheriff, and others. The author, Lizzy May
Elwyn, also wrote a temperance farce and several other plays. [We have
reconstructed the imprint as Bryant Pond, Maine. It is in the same county
as Bethel (Oxford) where the play was presented. Also, the Maine State
Library cites a publication, "Reunion of the Teachers and Scholars of
Woodstock: Held at Bryant’s Pond October 9, 1890," printed at Bryant’s Pond
by A. M. Chase & Co. printers. 1891.] [Pictures by request.] $150.00
