LOG FOR "MAPLEWOOD PLACE," A RESORT HOTEL ON PUT-IN-BAY, OHIO, 1891-1929. .
216pp of entries, season by season for 39 years. Leading off the signatures
of guests is C.H. Hubbard, Sunday, May 3, 1891. Hundreds of others follow.
Surnames include: Warner, Williamson, Banks, Eisenhart, many different
Clarks, Church, Brennan, Carter, O'Neill, Benham, Kellogg, McDonald,
Hornaday, Gillespie, Harvey, Beeson, Jennings, Cellarius, Bemus, Hardaway,
Brumbaugh, Gililland, Prestele, Lemay, Wetzel, Alcott, &c. &c. Bound in
burgundy calf; spine peeled, text block bit shaken but intact. Newspaper
obituary of Lemuel N. Clark, of Dayton, pasted to rear free-endpaper. 7.5"
x 5" Good . Full Calf.
Visitors came from many places accessible by steamboats to this Put-in-Bay
resort on Bass Island in Lake Erie. They hailed from various Ohio towns and
from St. Louis, Detroit, Ottawa, Louisiana, NYC, Coonville-Alabama, the
yacht "Elsie," yacht "Thera," Chicago, Philadelphia, Stanford--CA, Peoria,
Danville, &c. Some guests wrote a full page of comments; some drew
cartoons; others wrote doggerel verse; some called The Williamson or
Maplewood the "Best place on earth"; some celebrated July 4th there; some,
Thanksgiving; some wrote about the "big feed"; the "great fishing," etc.
Some were specific: "Left the Island for Cleveland after spending a most
pleasant week with the Williamson family at Maplewood Place...." "Mother
caught the fish while I caught a bad case of sun burn." "Oh, no, I got
another jigger [chigger]." "It isn't far, oh no. It's a good thing the
donkey called for us." "Thanks for the great pleasure of seeing the yacht
races." "Arrived on Str. 'Arrow' and spent the night at Eagle Cottage."
"Caught 5 fish / Caught one seasickness." "Full of rest, eats, chiggers &
mosquitoes. Had a dandy time." "Here's to Lake Erie and Put in Bay! Long
we'll remember our Fishing Day! Here's to the Maplewood folk so kind...."
"...dedication of 'Perry Hall' which was a great event [centennial of the
Battle of Lake Erie]." "We were here for the Ragatta and had a wonderful
time."  "October 31, 1910--'Maplewood' closed for the season. Mrs. S.E.
Williamson & daughter left on the Steamer Kirby." "April 1st, 1914,
Maplewood opened for the season." "Sept. 28, 1917, C.B. Williamson...on way
to Fort Leavenworth, Kas. to report for military training. Assigned to
active service as 1st Lieutenant in Engineer Section...." "August 14th,
1919, Hotel Victory burned." "May 17, 1921, The Groupe arrived, having
'motored' from Cleveland in 'The Fliver'...."  [Maplewood Place was owned
and operated by Ella, Carrol, and Grace Williamson of St. Louis, based on
