[Marco Girolamo Vida:] The Poetics of Marcus Hieronymus Vida, Bishop of Alba; With Translations from the Latin of Dr Lowth, Mr Gray, and Others. By John Hampson, A.M. Sunderland: Printed by T. Reed; for G. G. J. and J. Robinson, Paternoster-Row, and J. Johnson, St Paul’s Church-Yard, London, MDCCXCIII [1793]. FIRST EDITION. Early/period calf; 8vo; [6], xxiv, 256, [8] pp.; with the half-title, list of subscribers, errata slip affixed to the last (blank) page. ESTC T101573.

An uncommon translation of De Arte Poetica (On the Art of Poetry) by Marco Girolamo Vida (1485-1566); also included are translations of Latin odes by Thomas Gray and Bishop Robert Lowth, as well as a "Life" of the author, John Hampson, who was raised a Methodist and preached under John Wesley before leaving the body and taking holy orders in the Church of England, becoming rector of Sunderland in 1801. He is probably best remembered for his Memoirs of the late Rev. John Wesley, A.M., with a Review of his Life and Writings, and a History of Methodism from its Commencement in 1729 to the Present Time (1791).

Rather scarce, but also rather rough: considerable wear and rubbing to the mismatched boards, spine and hinges "repaired" with clear plastic tape, also at the gutter between the endpapers; hinges cracked; front free-endpaper (blank) with loss to the upper corner; obscured signature to title-page; browning and offsetting to the leaves; two leaves with a long horizontal tears but no loss of text; mild stain to the first 3 leaves. The list of subscribers includes Sir Ralph Milbanke, father of Annabella Milbanke, "Princess of Parallelograms," the future ill-fated wife of Lord Byron.
