Thomas Chevalier: Remarks on Suicide. London: [s.n.], 1824. Softcover 8vo in recent wraps with printed label; 9 pp. (p. [365]-373). First edition thus; extracted from The Pamphleteer.

In this essay, Chevalier "urges that suicide is often one of the earliest symptoms of insanity, as shown by the history of those who have failed in the attempt, and he recommends verdicts of 'suicide during insanity' in the majority of cases" (DNB). Thomas Chevalier (1767-1824) was a respected linguist and theologian as well as being professor of anatomy and surgery at the Royal College of Surgeons. His other works included translations of Pascal's Thoughts and Bossuet's Universal History. His Treatise on Gunshot Wounds (1804) secured him the appointment as surgeon extraordinary to the Prince of Wales. Remarks on Suicide was his last published work.
