MORGENTHAU, Henry, [Sr.]  AMBASSADOR MORGENTHAU'S STORY.  ILLUSTRATED.  N. Y., 1926.  Later printing. Original cloth, just slight wear. SIGNED inscription to Mrs. [Georgine] Shillard-Smith "with the best compliments of Henry Morgenthau, April 11, [1 9] 31."  German-born Morgenthau Sr. was best known as the U.S. Ambassador to the Ottoman Empire during World War One, when he came to be identified as the most prominent American to speak out against the massacre of Armenians, which he discussed in 4  chapters of this book. .  He was the father of F.D.R's Secy of the Treasury and grandfather of the author/historian Barbara Tuchman. Mrs.Shillard-Smith, an artist and philanthropist, studied under Cecelia Beaux & Henri. Her portrait by H. H. Breckenridge is owned by the Phila. Museum of Art.  $75

PERKINS, FRANCES.  THE ROOSEVELT I KNEW.  N. Y. 1946.  2nd printing.  Original gilt-stamped cloth, very good, in the lightly worn dust wrapper. SIGNED on the end paper by  Secretary Perkins, the first woman in U. S. history to be appointed to the Cabinet.  She was Secretary of Labor from 1933 to 1945. In that position she championed the CCC, the PWA, the Federal Works Agency, the NRA, and, with the Social Security Act, established unemployment benefits. She was largely responsible for the U. S. adoption of social security, unemployment insurance, federal laws regulating child labor and the federal minimum wage law. $40
