ARISTOTLE'S MASTER-PIECE . . . THE SECRETS OF GENERATION, I N ALL THE PARTS THEREOF . . . [&] A PRIVATE LOOKING-GLASS FOR THE FEMALE SEX . . . London: “Smith, Jones & Co.”, 1838. Original ribbed cloth, 6-1/2 X 3-1/2 inches, rear cover lightly soiled, a well-preserved copy of this "under the counter" sex manual. Fronts-portrait and one woodcut, of a human anomaly. 142 pages. The imprint is, of course, fictitious, and the book may, indeed, have been printed in this country. OCLC locates only 3 copies (Harvard Medical Libr., Brown, U. Vt.) ("Marriage, insufficiency in men and women, monstrous births, midwives, the womb, the genitals, copulation, maladies of the womb, cure, &c, &c.") All editions of this work tend to be scarce. Being cheaply produced, they are often in tatters - this copy being a happy exception. [8024] ($200) $100

CLEMENS (Samuel Langhorne)], "Mark TWAIN", Pseud. HOW TO TELL A STORY: THE HUMOROUS STORY OF AN AMERICAN DEVELOPMENT, -- ITS DIFFERENCE FROM COMIC AND WITTY STORIES. [IN: THE YOUTH'S COMPANION, BOSTON, OCTOBER 3rd, 1895] Tall folio, approx. 16 X 11 inches, 12 pages, as issued. A few small marginal tears. Twain's piece occupies about 2/3rds of a page. It was the title-piece in his "How to Tell a Story and Other Essays" published in 1897. Here, as elsewhere, Twain's work in its original periodical appearances in the original formats have value, not only as first printings, but also in view of his tendency to re-edit. [8128] ($175) $100

SHELLEY, Percy B. THE BANQUET OF PLATO TRANSLATED FROM THE GREEK OF PLATO. Chicago: Way and Williams, 1895. Gilt-stamped red buckram boards, spine somewhat darkened with horizontal crack in the cloth, front hinge cloth split, some wear to top/bottom of spine, binding tight, good overall. Approx. 7" x 4.75", 126 pp. Top edge gilt, other edges untrimmed, tear in p. 67-68 not affecting text, decorated initial and tail-piece, clean and bright; library bookplate of George W. Harris, "Geo. Wesley Harris Chicago" in light blue ink on half-title page, otherwise unmarked. A scarce edition with decorations by Bruce Rogers. Kraus 9. [7066] ($175) $75

Approx. 6.25" x 3.75", 383 pp. Printed in Greek, speckled brown edges, intact green placeholder ribbon, some wear to paste-downs and end-papers, ornaments at end of each section, clean and bright. A fine copy of this difficult-to-find edition. SCARCE EDITION. [6734] ($200) $125
