Croquet: The Rules Governing the Game, as Adopted by the National American Croquet Association, October 4, 1882. [No place: NACA, 1882] 12mo, original pale green wrappers; 11 pp. Upper right corner of the upper wrapper is chipped (not touching the printed border), the wrappers are split about two-thirds of the way up the spine and are somewhat soiled. A good copy. 



The first printed rules of the game. As the Introduction says, “The necessity for a uniform Code of Rules governing Croquet Players throughout the country, has, for a long time been apparent. During the Fall of 1882, players from New York City, Boston, Philadelphia, and Norwich, Ct., joined in a call for a Convention to organize a National Association, and adopt National Rules. This call was sent to about twenty-five clubs, and on October 4 th , 1882, the Convention met on the grounds of the New York Croquet Club, 127 th Street and 5 th Avenue, New York, when the following rules were adopted.” S carce: OCLC lists only three copies, at Notre Dame, Univ. of Illinois, and Univ. of British Columbia.
