EVERETT, Edward. AUTOGRAPH LETTER SIGNED (ALS). . Two-page letter
written as governor of Massachusetts dated 13 December 1836,
Charlestown, Mass., on both sides of a 7-7/8" x 9-7/8" sheet. Regarding
an appointment sought by the man he is writing to, addressed here as
"Sir" but known to be John Davis. Everett also asks Davis's advice on
how to spend some surplus revenue. Edward Everett--a Unitarian minister
and member of both the United States Congress and Senate in addition to
being governor of Massachusetts--is perhaps best known for his oratory
powers. It is he who gave the "other" address at Gettysburg on 19
November 1863. The next day he wrote Lincoln saying, "I should be glad
if I could flatter myself that I came as near the central idea of the
occasion in two hours as you did in two minutes." Creases from folding;
otherwise Fine. (#010207) $250.00
