Offered today:

Paul Kristeller (1863-1931).

Early Florentine Woodcuts. With an Annotated List of Florentine Illustrated Books.

LIMITED EDITION of 500 copies. Originally published in a limited edition in 1897, this is Paul Kristeller's most important study of early book illustration. Large 8vo. 11 x 7 3/4 inches. ix, (xlvi), 184, [2], 123, [1 blank] pp. Half-title, title-page vignette, index of printers and publishers, 123 pages of illustrations; text clean, unmarked. Red cloth, spine titled in gilt, top edge stained red, dust-jacket; binding square and tight, front panel of jacket with tears at top margin but now nicely preserved in archival mylar. Very Good.

The marriage between woodcut and type attained a perfection in Florence that has rarely been equaled in the history of book production. The woodcuts were produced in the brief period between 1490 and 1508, but the blocks continued to be used by printers in their workshops throughout the sixteenth century. It is a fundamental study that has not been superseded by later research. From the jacket flap. Paul Kristeller was a German art historian and independent scholar.
