First French edition. Two volumes, 8vo (20 cm), in period French bindings of full mottled calf, spines elaborately tooled in gilt, gilt-lettered morocco spine labels, marbled endpapers; [4], xxxvi, 520, [2] p.; [4], 673, [6] p.; complete with the half-titles, errata leaves, four pages of publisher's adverts, and five folding engraved maps. Sabin 67692.

First French edition of one of the classic accounts of the Revolutionary War. The maps are of particular interest, consisting of a large folding map of the Carolinas; Parker's Attack on Fort Moultrie; Sullivan Island; the Siege of Charleston Harbor; and the Siege of York and Gloucester. Ramsay's work, The History of the Revolution of South-Carolina, first published in Trenton in 1785, was important not only for its record of the war in the south, but also as being the first book granted a copyright by Congress.

Bindings show some bumping and wear to the corners, light wear to the edges and spine ends, a couple of small wormholes; hinges starting to crack at the ends, but all the boards are secure; faint damp-stain to the top edges of the first 3 leaves in vol. I; light bumping/wear to the fore-edge margin of one map where it protrudes slightly from the text block; large map of Carolina with a tiny closed tear at the fold and some light creases from mis-folding; a few scattered small spots to the leaves; otherwise the contents are bright and fresh, firmly bound, the maps clean and crisp. Small bookplates of Roy G. Fitzgerald on the front paste-downs. A superior example of an uncommon work.
