[HAWTHORNE, Nathaniel]. THE TOKEN AND ATLANTIC SOUVENIR. Boston: C. 
Bowen, 1837. First Edition. Duodecimo (4-1/4" x 6-7/8") bound in the 
original full black roan leather, gilt borders and rules, owner's 
name--"Sarah Dytch"--in gilt on the front cover. Includes the first 
publication of eight pieces by Nathaniel Hawthorne (BAL 7580), two by 
Lydia Sigourney (BAL 17700), one by Oliver Wendell Holmes (BAL 8727), 
and one by Sarah Whitman which BAL (21349) cites as her first 
publication. Illustrated with nine of the twelve plates called for. 
Possibly the scarcest of the fifteen TOKENS issued from 1828 to 1842. 
Some foxing, lacking a front blank. Moderate edgewear, rubbing to 
hinges, covers tight. Good.

The eight pieces by Hawthorne are "Monsieur du Miroir" (pp. 49-64, 
signed "by the Author of Sights from a Steeple") and "Mrs. Bullfrog" 
(pp. 66-75, signed "by the Author of Wives of the Dead"), both collected 
in MOSSES FROM AN OLD MANSE (1846); "The Man of Adamant. An Apologue" 
(pp. I 19-28, signed "By the Author of The Gentle Boy"), collected in 
THE SNOW-IMAGE (1852); and "Sunday at Home" (pp. 88-96, signed "by the 
Author of the Gentle Boy"), "David Swan. A Fantasy" (pp. 147-55, 
unsigned), "The Great Carbuncle. A Mystery of the White Mountains" (pp. 
156-75, signed "By the Author of The Wedding Knell"), "Fancy's Show Box. 
A Morality" (pp. 177-84, unsigned), and "The Prophetic Pictures" (pp. 
289-307, unsigned), all collected in TWICE-TOLD TALES (1837).
