TITLE: “The Antiquities of Heraldry, collected from the literature, coins,
gems, vases, and other monuments of pre-Christian and Medieval Times; with
a catalogue of Early Armorial Seals: tending to show that modern heraldry
embodies or is derived from the religious symbols, the military devices,
and the emblems of the heathen deities of antiquity”

By William Smith Ellis.
Published in London by John Russell Smith in 1869.

DISCUSSION: An extended argument for the antiquarian origins of heraldry,
diverging from the popular scholarly view that its origins lay no earlier
than the 12th century or so. This was an expansion of his earlier, much
shorter, work, “A Plea for the Antiquity of Heraldry”, published in 1853.

DESCRIPTION: Hardcover. 6”x9”, 276 pages, plus 2 colored and 18 black &
white lithographed plates, plus a 56-page catalog of other Smith titles.

the photo above). Binding dry, with tender hinges, the first several pages
partly detached, and completely cracked apart at the junction of the text
and plates (please see the photo below)
