*[ENCYCLOPAEDIA BRITANNICA]
/THE ENCYCLOPAEDIA BRITANNICA / A / Dictionary / of / Arts, Sciences,
Literature and General Information / Eleventh Edition/*
Cambridge, UK, Cambridge University Press 1910-1911, 11th edition, .
Illustrated with maps, and colored, b&w illustrations. Twenty-nine
volumes, uniformly bound in moss-green coloured suede, with a.e.g., 4to.
This is the "thin paper edition", printed on "onionskin" paper,
complete with the magnificent mahogany tiered standing bookcase.
¶ This, the most famous of all encyclopedias in the English language,
was sponsored by a "Society of Gentlemen in Scotland", (/Printing and
the Mind of Man/) and was first published in three volumes in 1771. This
is perhaps the most desirable edition of this encyclopedia and was the
last to contain signed, extensive articles on the major areas of human
knowledge and endeavour. "It is noteworthy for its index which has
justly been described as the best index of any work of reference".
(P&TMOM). Each of the 29 volumes in this complete set measures
approximately 11 1/2" x 9", and each contains perhaps 1,000 pages which,
being printed on onionskin paper, result in a thickness per volume
hardly exceeding one inch. Each is bound in moss green coloured suede
with silk-sewn endpapers of supple (and sensual) calf. All volumes are
stamped in gilt with the title, edition number, and volume designation,
as well as the crest of the University Press at Cambridge. Most volumes
are in excellent condition, but as might be expected, a few volumes show
wear and small tears to the binding, primarily near the spine ends. The
last volume - the Index - shows the most wear although the binding is
tight, but only in fair condition. The contents of each and every volume
are in uniformly excellent condition. The custom made solid mahogany
bookcase measures 51" x 15" x 11" and is in unblemished condition.
Digital photos are available. Shipping to the U.S. can be arranged for a
surprisingly modest charge.
