Collecting Works of Art, and the Importance of Taste in Education and
Morals. Art at Home Series.
Philadelphia: Porter & Coates, n.d. [ca. 1877] Caxton Press seal on
t.p. verso. Prob. first U.S. edition. First published in London by
Macmillan in 1876.
Description: Crown octavo. x, [2] 100 pp. Frontispiece with tissue
(Smith's Sideboard) & 2 full page wood-engraved illustrations + 11
initials, tailpieces, illustrations within text. Decorated title
page. Blue cloth with black stamped decoration & lettering. Dark brown
end papers.
Condition: Good- (significant rub/mottling, wrinkling of cloth; paper
age-toned; some light smudging & offprint; binding strings showing,
but still firm). Plates bright & clean. Faint inscription of original
owner on first blank dated Jan 1882.
Comments: Chapters include The Prudence of Collecting, Furnishing and
Old Furniture, Pictures, Books and China, Art and Morals. William John
Loftie, born in Northern Ireland, was a British clergyman and writer
on the history of London, art and architecture, and travel. This
publication is one of his earliest books.
Garrett, Rhoda [1841-1882] and Agnes Garrett [1845-1935]
Suggestions for House Decoration in Painting, Woodwork and Furniture.

Description: Crown octavo. viii, 90 pp. Frontispiece with tissue
(drawing room mantel) & 5 full page wood-engraved illustrations + 1
figure of "Initial letter on old linen" in text. Decorated title page.
All illustrations present. Green cloth with black stamped decoration &
lettering. Dark brown end papers.
Condition: Very Good (moderate rub/mottling of cloth; small black ink
spot on edge of spine; paper age-toned; several tiny spots in text)
Binding tight. All plates bright & clean. No previous owner's names or
marks.
Comments: From W.J. Loftie's preface in A Plea for Art in the House:
"A second volume of the series will be issues almost simultaneously
with this one, containing some hints on "House Decoration," by Miss
Rhoda Garrett and her partner, Miss Agnes Garrett." From Elizabeth
Crawford's The Women's Suffrage Movement: a Reference Guide,
1866-1928: The authors apprenticed with architect Daniel Cottier in
1875 and established the first all female decorating company in England.
The authors emphasize the Queen Anne style, rather unusual for this
period of the the Aesthetic and Arts and Crafts Movements.
