*KING PENGUIN / /A COMPLETE SET OF 76 DIFFERENT HARD COVER TITLES, MANY
IN PUBLISHER'S ORIGINAL DUST JACKETS./* Penguin Books, London. 1st
edition, 12mo.
The King Penguin books were a series of pocket-sized monographs,
published by Penguin Books between 1939 and 1959. They were done to
emulate the Insel-Bucherei series, published in Germany by Insel Verlag
earlier in the century, and they were pioneer volumes for Penguin in
that they were their first books with hard covers and their first with
colour printing. The books originally combined a classic series of
colour plates with an authoritative text. Thus, the first two volumes
featured 16 plates from John Gould's "The Birds of Britain" (1873) with
historical introduction and commentary on each plate by Phyllis
Barclay-Smith, and 16 plates from Redoute's "Roses" (1817-24) with
historical introduction and commentary by John Ramsbottom. The third
volume began the alternative practice of colour plates from a variety of
sources. Some of the volumes, such as Nikolaus Pevsner's "Leaves of
Southwell" (1945), or Wilfrid Blunt's "Tulipomania" (1950), were
pioneering works of scholarship. Others, such as "The Bayeux Tapestry"
(1943), by Eric Maclagan, "Ur: The First Phases" (1946), by Leonard
Woolley, or
"Russian Icons" (1947), by David Talbot Rice, were distillations by
experts of their own pioneering works. (Wikipedia) The series ran to 76
volumes under editors Elizabeth Senior (1939-1943) and Nikolaus Pevsner
(1943-1959). Our set is complete. Titles include "Magic Books from
Mexico", Egyptian Paintings", "Ur: The First Phases", "Children as
Artists", etc. etc. Thirty-four volumes are in encased in their original

minimal. A few have bookplates, booksellers' tickets, or an ink
inscription. Sold as one lot.
