The Divine Right of Episcopacy Asserted. Wherein Is Proved, That Episcopacy Is of Divine, and Apostolical Institution: By a Presbyter of the Church of England  
Title: "And that it was the Government to the Christian Church during the Three First Stages if it; and was design to be Perpetual in it to the End of the World. With An Account of the Distinction of the Three Orders of Bishop, Presbyter, and Deacon. To Reconcile the Differenting Parties to that Form of Church Government." Most likely written by George Hickes himself being a prolific writer whose earlier works were published anonymously, and he published the Dignity of the Episcopal Order in 1707. The twenty chapters consist of "Divine" and "Particular" proofs of  the Episcopacy being an early part (First through Third Centuries) of the ecclesiastical "Hierarchy". Early Jewish-Christian leaders and martyrs such as St. James, St. Simeon, St. Titus, St. Jerome, and others are referenced, along with testimonies of the Apoplectic Fathers, New Testament Biblical works, etc. continuing through the third century. Included is "A Sermon of the authoritie of the Kayes,"( in a different font ) by Thomas Cranmer, 1489 -1556, The Archbishop of Canterbury (during the rule of Henry VIII). George  Hickes, England, 1642-1750,  writer, scholar, divine he became Chaplain to King James II, in 1681, he refused to take the oath of allegiance during the Revolution of 1688, (Glorious Revolution). Hickes published two popular treatise on Christianity: Of the Christian Priesthood and the other Of the Dignity of the Episcopal Order, originally published in 1707, however his most noted works were: Institutiones Grammaticae Anglo-Saxonicae et Moeso-Gothicae (1689), and Linguarum veterum septentrionalium thesaurus grammatico-criticus et archÊologicus (1703-1705). 
Original tooled delicate design leather boards, soil, scratches, corners very rubbed, re-cased with new calf spine,, five ridges, new maroon leather title panel with gilt lettering. Previous owners name date 1827 to e.p. new f.e.p. Text toned throughout with foxing, text is very heavy, good font, easy to red. 
Errata facing chapter I has small worm hole to lower page, no text. Small, neat, previous owners name to e.p. and margin of title page. Verso of title page, facing Preface, in old fountain pen "the whole work believed to be by  XXX? Hickes".  Iviii, 228, sm 8 vo. First edition.
