Greetings,

We are pleased to offer a sweet copy of Mrs. Radcliffe's famous
romantic thriller. Though often reprinted, not many older copies have
survived through the years: this gothic tale was "read to death."

Some pictures are posted here:

Many thanks for looking.

The Mysteries of Udolpho. Three Volumes in One. By Mrs. Ann Radcliffe.
Philadelphia: Leary and Getz (1854). Trigesimo-segundo 32mo. (5 3/16 x
3 1/2). 208, 207, 206 pp. Black leather hardcover with gilt spine
title and ornate gilt spine decoration; gilt and blind-stamped
decorative boards.

Significant hand rub to spine which has become mostly suede; shelf
wear on edges and corners; loosening of front board at first blank;
contents slightly foxed and age-toned, mostly within pages of first
volume and at endpapers; rear blank page seems to have been removed.
Signature of former owner (?Allie Straley?) on front and back
endpapers. No other marks found. Contents otherwise clean and still
legible, binding intact. Complete. Sweet, well-read chubby little
volume in good antiquarian condition.

The Mysteries of Udolpho (originally published in four volumes in
1794) is Ann Radcliffe?s classic gothic tale of castles, abductions,
and Italian villains. It enjoyed immense popularity in eighteenth- and
nineteenth-century England and inspired many copies and parodies,
including (most notably) Jane Austen?s Northanger Abbey, in which
heroine Catherine Morland imagines her life to be infused with gothic
danger after reading too much Ann Radcliffe.

Though Mrs. Radcliffe's most famous book had been reprinted often by
the middle of the 19th century, this first edition for Leary and Getz
is exceedingly rare--only one copy is found on WorldCat and that in
the New York Public Reserve Library in Special Collections.

$225 Postpaid in U.S. Elsewhere at cost. Reciprocal trade.
