Journeymen Horseshoers Local Union, No. 58.

Rules Governing the Use of Label Authorized by Local Union, No. 58, of San Jose, California.

Broadside. 11 x 5 1/2 inches. Printed on one side with a horseshoe logo, two fleurons, and printer’s device and the bottom of the page; text clean, unmarked, creased. SCARCE. Very Good.

This broadside promulgates 19 rules governing the use of the Label approved by the Journeymen Horseshoers Local Union, No. 58 of San Jose, California; the label was impressed upon “any kind of a shoe that is applied to the foot.” The International Union of Journeymen Horseshoers of the United States and Canada was first organized in Denver Colorado on September 12, 1873, formed to represent horseshoers employed by large livery companies. During the early years the JHU members and leadership were active in the labor movement. As the industrial revolution progressed the JHU was closely associated with the Teamsters Union, so that no Teamster would drive any horse with did not bear a JHU logo on its shoe. Rule 19 ordered that “No work on Sundays or Holidays” be performed. As automobiles replaced horses on American roads, the Journeymen Horseshoers Union contracted to shops associated with racetracks, but with the increase of horse ownership for sport and recreation, there has been a resurgence of the JHU.
