Berkeley Defense Council.

Safety Rules for Protection in Case of Gas Attack.

Berkeley: Berkeley Defense Council, 1941.

Broadside. 12 x 5 inches. Printed one side with single hole punched in the top margin for posting; text clean, unmarked, light toning, mild crinkling to bottom margin. SCARCE. Very Good.

"Post this card in a conspicuous place in the bathroom." In the wake of the attack on Pearl Harbor on December 7, 1941, and the Declaration of War by Congress on December 8, 1941, the West Coast of the United States was in an uproar. In Berkeley, the City Council established the Berkeley Defense Council, to be under the direction of Mayor Frank S. Gaines. The Council directed the activities of 12,000 volunteers who were given basic training, and provided information on civilian defense, such as this broadside advising safety procedures during gas attacks upon civilian populations. Major headings include: A) When Air Raid Siren Sounds; B) If You Are In The House When Gas Alarm is Sounded; C) If You Are Outside And Have Been Splashed With Liquid Gas; and so forth. Doubtless the preparedness efforts kept the population at a fever pitch. The Council's work was reported regularly in the local press. This is the only copy in the trade; no copies recorded in Worldcat.
