Mary Russell Mitford: Julian, A Tragedy. London: G. and W.B. Whittaker, 1823. Second edition (same year as the first). Tall 8vo in period forest green morocco tooled in gilt and blind, rebacked with the original spine laid down; all page edges gilt. Binding with some rubbing and soiling, modest wear to the corners, original spine leather sunned with some loss at the ends; a few leaves with scattered foxing.

PRESENTATION COPY, inscribed on the title-page: "To — Histon[?] Esqre. - a slight token of most sincere gratitude - from his obliged & attached friend, The Author." Additionally, Mitford has inscribed a few manuscript corrections and additions to the text (in one annotation, she disclaims authorship of the dedication to William Charles Macready). One of a number of tragical plays that Mitford turned out, primarily to support her spendthrift father, Julian was produced, with Macready in the title role, at Covent Garden in 1823, the year before the first appearance in book form of Our Village, the series of sketches for which she is best, and justifiably, remembered.
