TITLE: “The Arts of India. A Poem”

By Edmund Russell.
Published in Calcutta by Thacker, Spink & Co. in 1901.

DISCUSSION: A poem extolling the arts of India and their resurgence under
Colonial rule. The text includes Russell’s 11-stanza poem, an
introduction, by Romesh Dutt, describing how it came to be written, notes
explaining each stanza by A. Sarah Kumar Ghosh, and pen illustrations by
Evelyn Stuart Hardy. A note at the beginning informs us that the poem was-
“Read for the first time before Her Royal Highness The Princess Christian
in the Dunbar Hall of the house of Lord Brassy”. Wikipedia notes- “Edmund
Russell cut quite an exotic public figure, disdaining European male attire
in favor of Eastern garb with a reputation as both an actor and
Orientalist who had actually been to India. He taught deportment and gave
dramatic readings that melded spiritualism with exoticism in a uniquely
American context.”

Scarce- OCLC notes 7 institutional holdings, none appear in the trade.

DESCRIPTION: Softcover. 6”x9.75”, title page + 20 leaves, black & white
illustrations. Inscribed by Russell to “Miss Phillips”. Patterned gold
softcover.
