29906 Sendak, Maurice 4 LARGE SENDAK PIECES DONE FOR "IN THE NIGHT KITCHEN" Sendak, Maurice VG 2 Paperback Harper Row 1970 Description: This lot features four pieces of artwork: These four pieces were done for "In The Night Kitchen"Artist: Maurice SendakMedium: Commercial lithographyYear: 1970Dimensions: Unframed, measures 15" by 20 1/2"Details/Condition: Maurice Bernard Sendak (born June 10, 1928) is an American writer and illustrator of children's literature. He is best known for his book "Where the Wild Things Are," published in 1963. Sendak gained international acclaim after writing and illustrating "Where the Wild Things Are," a Caldecott Medal-winning picture book about a boy banished to his bedroom without his supper. He deals with his anger by imagining himself king of an island filled with enormous, frightening monsters. Critically acclaimed and controversial, Sendak is one of the first children's writers to deal frankly with the fears and anxieties of childhood. "Where the Wild Things Are" is the first in a trilogy, to be followed by "In the Night Kitchen" (1970) and "Outside over There" (1981) , which, in Sendak's words, are "all variations on the same theme: how children master various feelings--anger, boredom, fear, frustration, jealousy--and manage to come to grips with the realities of their lives." Mr. Sendak's original drawings are constantly in demand by museums, art galleries and collectors everywhere. Although most of his original work is archived at the Rosenbach Museum & Library in Philadelphia, his pictures are represented in many major collections around the world. It understates his importance to simply call him a genius in his field: he has been called "the Picasso of Children's Books", and for more than a half-century his work has been critically praised, admired and emulated. Retrospective exhibitions have been held at the Ashmolean Museum (Oxford, 1975) , the Pierpont Morgan library (New York, 1981) , the Indianapolis Museum of Art (1999) , the Brennan Jewish Heritage Museum in Atlanta (2001, a version of which went on national tour) , the Eric Carle Museum of Picture Books (November 2002) , Brandywine River Museum (2003) , and most recently a remarkable survey of his art at the Jewish Museum (New York, 2005) covering both his book work and sets/costumes for opera and ballet, subsequently extending the show to the Tampa Art Museum in Florida (2006). The works are in very good condition, showing mild examples of handling, all outside image areas. Some of the margins have been clipped off in the graphics due to their large size since I only have a 13 x17" scanner. All edges are clean and straight. The front and back views show all 4 edges between them. 250.00

It should be noted that this Sendak poster comes directly from the artist's own archive. On heavy paper . Red objects in the picture are positioning magnets. 1000.00

33438Maurice Sendak/heinrich Von KleistUNTRIMMED PRESS SHEET OF SENDAK BOOK ILLUSTRATIONS 19 X 15" COLOR [FROM SENDAK'S PRIVATE ARCHIVES] FOR "PENTHESILEA," Maurice Sendak/heinrich Von Kleist F 1 Print 1 Color Illustrations Harper Collins? Elephant Folio 23" tall c1997 1st Edition art UNTRIMMED PRESS SHEET OF SENDAK BOOK ILLUSTRATIONS 19 X 15" COLOR [FROM SENDAK'S PRIVATE ARCHIVES] FOR "PENTHESILEA". Untrimmed press sheet of Maurice Sendak illustrations shown in the corresponding image (s). This is the complete series of 12 full-page illustrations to Heinrich von Kleist's tragedy "Penthesilea," printed in full color and published in book form 1998 by HarperCollins. This full sheet, printed only on one side and measures 19 x 25 inches, each design 4-5/8 x 3-1/4 inch arranged in four columns of three, with a vertical color-strip at the right fore-edge for accurate reproduction of the artist's original pencil and watercolor images. Whether this was intended for binding up into book format with the printed text or for use in creating a separate suite of images (for a deluxe edition, which was never produced) , we do not know, but it comes directly from the artist and is a wonderful curiosity filled with powerfully charged images as only Mr Sendak can create. The story is about an army of Amazons who set out to conquer Greek heroes for the purpose of impregnating themselves to bring forth new females to inhabit their all-woman state. They arrive in the midst of the Trojan War and totally confuse both Greeks and Trojans as to their intended mission, briefly forcing their enemies into an alliance for self-preservation. Then Achilles the Greek meets Penthesilea, Queen of the Amazons, and traditional roles reverse as Achilles is now the intended victim in a tragedy of love and war. This would be a great addition to any Sendak collection, though please be aware that these pictures show nudity and adult situations and are not intended for children. An unusual and powerful work by Sendak. Red objects in the picture are positioning magnets. 400.00
